If you are one of those people that doesn’t understand the science behind the breastmilk alcohol theory, you might be surprised to learn that it’s true. Breastmilk alcohol is a poison that is created when alcohol and alcohol-related chemicals and products are absorbed into the breastmilk. It kills baby and mother alike.
However, some women are still drinking the stuff. A new study (published in the January 2006 edition of the journal Human Milk, by Drs. Anya Berenbaum and Darryl Blumberg) found that alcohol use in breastmilk may be linked to a reduced risk of childhood obesity.
The reason that alcohol is bad for your baby is because it disrupts the breastmilk’s ability to produce antibodies that help protect her from being eaten by her mother’s enemies. The antibodies produced by the immune system in breastmilk actually help protect your baby from diseases and infections. But when the child is breastfed for months, the antibodies are gone.
As it turns out, breastmilk alcohol is also linked to a decreased risk of childhood obesity. Women who drink alcohol in breastmilk are less likely to become obese and more likely to gain weight once they do. This could be because alcohol disrupts the breastmilks ability to produce antibodies that help protect the baby from diseases and infections. The antibodies produced by the immune system in breastmilk actually help protect the baby from diseases and infections.
Breast milk may be a bit more of a challenge though when it comes to alcohol. The antibodies produced in breastmilk do not usually last as long as those produced in the blood. The antibodies in breastmilk can only be passed on for so long. The antibodies in the blood, however, last much longer. Breastmilk is a great source of antibodies, and if they are present, they can help protect against diseases and infections.
So if you are a parent who has a newborn, you may want to check your milk before feeding it to your baby. If your child is suffering any type of illness or infection, the antibodies in breastmilk can help protect him and you from the problem.
We don’t want to scare you too much, but you may want to avoid any liquids with alcohol in them. Alcohol has a tendency to cause blood clots in the blood vessels, so any alcohol in the breast milk is a big risk. Also, alcohol has a tendency to cause nausea, so if you are a parent of a baby who is having a medical procedure that involves a lot of blood, you may want to ask your doctor to let you down gently.
I think it is pretty safe to say that getting drunk is basically the worst thing you can do to your baby. I have an aunt who, at age thirty, had her baby put to sleep because she was drinking too much. I know this because my mom went through a similar experience some months ago.
I’m not saying your baby would benefit from the alcohol in your breastmilk, but you shouldn’t drink it too much. It is possible your baby would be fine, but it would be a horrible experience if it is. If, upon waking up, you find that your baby has fallen asleep with her head stuck over the side of the crib, don’t wake her up.
If you are over 18 and have not had a drink in six months, you should talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of drinking in breastmilk. There are some women who do it, and others who have babies that suffer from some type of brain injury.
