As we all know, there are three levels of self-awareness: our conscious awareness, our unconscious awareness, and our sub-conscious awareness.

Self-awareness is what we can consciously control. We can choose to do things that make us uncomfortable or like, for example, buy the new new fragrance. Conscious awareness is what we actually do when we’re not thinking about ourselves. It’s when we’re thinking about ourselves that we tend to think through our thoughts.

Conscious awareness is easy to achieve. It’s just about asking yourself, “are these my thoughts?” if the answer is yes, you have self-awareness. If you know you are thinking something, but you are not actually aware of that thought, then you have unconscious awareness.

Conscious awareness is an extremely powerful thing. It can be achieved by just noticing something (be it a thought or a smell), then letting go of it. What happens is that you stop thinking about it. You stop allowing it to enter your consciousness. You simply note it. To put it another way, you are not aware of a thought you have, it just entered your consciousness.

So just noticing the thought of cologne at the grocery store or in the bathroom, but it’s not actually there, is enough to awaken it. I’m sure if I saw a cologne in my bathroom, I’d be pretty aware of it, but I don’t actually think about it. This is a powerful, powerful thing. But what is it? It is an unconscious awareness.

The fact that you don’t know you have a thought is not a problem. This is actually a very helpful thing. It makes you aware of what thought you have and which one you have and allows you to know if you’re doing this consciously or not. Consciousness is just a big mystery. We’re not sure exactly what it is, but we think it’s a kind of memory.

As a matter of fact, the act of not thinking about a thing is called “cognitive inertia”. As you become aware of it, it becomes easier to do what you want to do and less likely to do what you don’t want to do.

In our experiment, our participants were asked to write down as many things as they could think of. In the end, one thing that popped up over and over again was the word “cologne.” In a study of over 1000 people, the people who thought of that word more often also thought of other words like “scent” and “fragrance.

The word cologne is a great example of cognitive inertia because this word came up in our study only once, in one of our participants’ mind. This suggests that we are probably not aware of the word cologne, and probably that we have some other word which we are not aware of. That is, the cognitive inertia concept describes the process by which a person thinks about a single thing, in this case the word cologne, without being aware of their thoughts.

In our study, our participants were asked to think of the word cologne which they had never before used or even heard. The study subjects were then asked to think about another word as well as the word cologne. This was done in both groups. We found that the subjects who were asked to think about cologne and then think about another word were the most likely to have used the second word after cologne.
