She becomes involved in a local case as a result of a call from the detective inspector Paul Maartens of Knysna Police Services. Nine people have mysteriously disappeared, without trace, over a period of weeks, and he asks for her help. Her life has taken a turn for the better, and she is reluctant to return to police work, but intrigued nevertheless. As her family and friends predict, she is soon involved, with interesting results. The other main character, Jonothan Spies, is an enigmatic character, with a past. Starting as the son of a respected attorney and an overbearing mother, Jono breaks the mould, and takes to a life of crime. All that changes when he meets Willie Pietersen, a gentle son of the earth, who acts as a catalyst to bring out Jonos true talent, and his deep-seated respect for the environment. On opposite sides, Martine and Jono share their interest in the disappearance of the nine people, until eventually they are brought together, and learn to accept and understand how their destinies may be linked. Their story is shared by other characters, some of whom play a pivotal role. The eventual outcome, once Martine discovers the solution to the mystery, is to change her life, as well as Jonos.
