I believe the more self-aware you are, the more you’re likely to find it very difficult to take the things that people say at face value. When you’re being self-aware you’re getting a peek into how other people act.
I recently had a conversation with a few people about this issue. Most people in this crowd are pretty smart but they tend to think of themselves as a little more self-aware than they really are. The fact is that most people are just human and their behavior is affected by a lot of things.
The difference between self-awareness and self-deprecation is that self-awareness is the more self-aware you are, and self-deprecation is the more self-aware you are. It’s no surprise that the number of people who say they are self-aware and proud of their self-awareness is on the rise. But in the same breath, it’s also no surprise that the number of people who say they are self-deprecating and proud of their self-deprecation is on the rise.
Self-awareness, in part, is the ability to notice our own behaviors and how they impact others. Self-depreciating, in part, is the ability to act on a non-self-aware response that people have.In other words, its no surprise that the number of people who say they are self-aware and proud of their self-awareness is on the rise.
A better way to think about this is that the ability to self-reflect can be a shield against the self-deprecating behavior, whereas self-awareness is a shield against the self-deprecating behavior. Self-awareness, in turn, can be a shield against the self-deprecating behavior, whereas self-depreciating, in turn, can be a shield against the self-deprecating behavior.
For instance, I’ve noticed the number of people who think that what they say about themselves is the same as what they are saying about themselves. I’m sure you’ve seen people saying, “I just want to get out of being someone who’s self-depreciating.
